Rather than a cognitive approach to developing one's Jewish identity, Prof. Nisan suggests an approach that bases the development of Jewish identity on emotion and love of the group. The development of this emotion is supported by complementary cognitive components (beliefs, norms, reasoning, perception of purpose), which are drawn from one's culture and acquired by suitable social experiences. In the developing emotional consciousness, the complementary cognitive components play a central role in the group identity.
In the last section of the article, the author suggests some thoughts and implications on Jewish identity and educating for identity.
